THE CHARACTER BEHIND THE ART
From Cherribomb Cosplay to the Visual Identity of morrigan69official
If you’ve explored the music, videos and artwork of morrigan69official, you’ve probably seen her: explosive pink hair, black leather, metal spikes, a handmade mask and an unmistakable punk attitude.
But the story behind that image isn’t simply the story of a cosplay.
It Started on a Dark and Stormy Night in the Bronx
It sounds like the beginning of a comic book.
For Maria, it was real.
In 2020, during a dark and stormy night in the Bronx, Maria was assaulted by her then-husband during what had become a long, controlling and abusive marriage. She remembers being struck with a marble stool.
That night became connected to an unexpected turning point in her life.
At the time, Hazbin Hotel existed publicly only through its original pilot. Maria discovered something in the explosive, rebellious energy of Cherribomb that contrasted sharply with the woman she felt she had been forced to become in her own life.
So she decided to build her.
Not buy her.
Build her.
Maria taught herself how to create her interpretation of the character from the ground up & the mask, wig, makeup, costume, props and styling. Piece by piece, she constructed someone fearless at a time when fear had become far too familiar.
At first, it was cosplay.
Then something unexpected happened.
The Woman Behind the Mask Began to Change
When Maria put on that mask, she could experiment with qualities she was struggling to reclaim in her everyday life.
She could be loud. Defiant. Funny. Chaotic. Fearless. Unapologetic.
And eventually, those qualities stopped belonging only to the character.
The confidence followed Maria when the costume came off.
Cosplay became one of the creative spaces through which she began rediscovering the woman underneath years of control—and ultimately became part of her journey toward leaving that marriage and beginning again.
12 Million Views Later
Maria continued rebuilding and evolving the cosplay.
The hair became bigger. The styling became more personal. Black leather, metal spikes, spiked chokers and wristlets, handmade accessories and Maria’s own SFX craftsmanship became recurring signatures.
Across social media, Maria’s content featuring her interpretation of the character has accumulated a combined 12 million views.
But behind those numbers is something far more important.
The character Maria originally built to feel fearless helped her remember that fearlessness already existed inside her.
From Cherribomb to morrigan69official
Maria doesn’t hide the origin of the character audiences recognize.
Yes, she began as Maria’s interpretation and cosplay build of Cherribomb from Hazbin Hotel.
But six years of craftsmanship, performance and personal evolution transformed the visual language surrounding that cosplay into something deeply connected to morrigan69official.
Today, the pink-haired alter ego appearing throughout Maria’s music and imagery represents the fearless, rebellious side of herself she once accessed through a mask.
That symbolism now extends into The Maria Project.
When Maria and her pink-haired alter ego appear together, the alter ego isn’t coming to rescue her.
She represents the part of Maria that learned she could rescue herself.
BUILT BY HAND. BECAME SOMETHING MORE.
A terrible night became an unexpected beginning.
A character inspired a costume.
A costume created a place for courage.
Courage followed Maria outside the mask.
And eventually, that courage became part of her art.
The woman behind the mask was always the important part.
